Santenay: Sculpture put to the test by the landscape<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Biennial of Contemporary Sculpture in Burgundy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if contemporary sculpture found its most fitting conditions outside the museum? In Santenay, at the Domaine du Ch\u00e2teau Philippe le Hardi \u2014 which graciously makes its spaces available \u2014 about twenty artists are taking over the vineyard landscape for an exhibition where the works, displayed in the open air, redefine their relationship to place, time and gaze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From July 4 to 11, 2026<\/strong>, this open-air exhibition brings together more than one hundred works, including several monumental installations, displayed throughout the park, the grounds of the ch\u00e2teau, and the surrounding vineyards. Organized by the Burgundy Contemporary Sculpture Biennial and supported by the town of Nolay\u2014involved in the project since its inception\u2014the exhibition is firmly rooted in the local community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, the landscape acts as a true partner. Changing light, mineral textures, and the lines of the vines: all these elements alter the perception of the works and integrate them into a sensory experience. Some sculptures stand out as landmarks in the space, while others are revealed gradually as visitors wander, in a more subtle way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The selection of artists embraces a wide diversity of approaches. For Sylvie Arfelli, Carole Auriac<\/strong>, and Xavier Embise<\/strong>, clay retains the trace of the artist’s hand and a distinctly organic dimension. The bronze, worked by Pascale Beneteau<\/strong>, Anita Bonici<\/strong> or \u00c9ric Vanel<\/strong>, oscillates between heritage and contemporary reinterpretation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Several works interact directly with the site. The corten steel structures of Julien Clar<\/strong> and \u00c9ric Vialla-Tweak<\/strong> play with time and the hues of the landscape, while \u00c9ric Chambon<\/strong> explores the tensions between sandstone and bronze. Christelle Meunier<\/strong>, for her part, uses Carrara marble to shift its codes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other artists blur the boundaries of the medium: Sophie Mattei<\/strong> combines bronze, earth and mineral resin in composite forms, while Anne Moreau Vagnon<\/strong> introduces textiles at the heart of sculpture. At David Benoit<\/strong>, the reference to Pompon becomes a point of friction more than a simple homage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around these proposals, Sylvie Gaudissart, Marc Antoine Lion, La\u00ebtitia-May Le Gu\u00e9laff, Gilles Pugin, Katty Verstraeten<\/strong> and Annick Dumarchey<\/strong> complete this panorama by exploring registers ranging from ceramics to hybrid forms. The exhibition also welcomes an artist presented by the FRAC Bourgogne, Sof\u00eda T\u00e1boas,<\/strong> as well as a collective work produced by the \u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts de Beaune<\/strong>. Added to this is the exceptional presence of British sculptor Paul Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Freely accessible, it appeals to both art enthusiasts and visitors passing through on the wine route. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Santenay, sculpture doesn’t impose itself; it is discovered, in harmony with the landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
